Synopsis (Content Introduction)
* Act I: King Heinrich of Germany arrives in Brabant to rally the nobles against invading forces. Count Telramund, urged by his pagan wife Ortrud, accuses Elsa of murdering her younger brother, Gottfried, to claim the throne. Elsa appeals to divine justice through trial by combat. A mysterious knight in shining armor arrives in a boat drawn by a swan. He offers to champion Elsa and marry her on one strict condition: she must never ask his name or origins. The knight defeats Telramund but spares his life.
* Act II: Banished and disgraced, Telramund and Ortrud plot their revenge outside the Antwerp cathedral. Ortrud preys on Elsa’s innocence, subtly planting the seeds of doubt regarding her protector’s identity. The next morning, during the wedding procession, both Telramund and Ortrud publicly interrupt the ceremony, accusing the nameless knight of sorcery and demanding he reveal his identity. Though shaken, Elsa reaffirms her trust, and the marriage goes forward.
* Act III: Following the famous Bridal Chorus, Elsa and her knight are finally alone in the bridal chamber. Overwhelmed by doubt and Ortrud’s psychological manipulation, Elsa breaks her vow and asks the forbidden question. Telramund bursts into the room to assassinate the knight but is instantly slain. The knight carries the matter before the King. He publicly reveals himself as Lohengrin, a Knight of the Holy Grail. Because his secret is broken, he must return to Monsalvat. Before departing, the swan is transformed back into Elsa's lost brother, Gottfried. Elsa sinks lifeless to the ground as Lohengrin vanishes into the distance.
