罗恩格林脚本由作曲家本人编写，和其遗作《帕西法尔》一样采用了《提特雷尔》和《帕西法尔》这两个诗篇中的故事。歌剧于1850年8月28日在魏玛的大公爵宫廷剧院首演，由李斯特指挥。当时瓦格纳因为参加了1849年德累斯顿革命而被政府通缉，在瑞士逃亡。作曲家本人直到1861年5月15日才在维也纳第一次听到《罗恩格林》全剧的演出。
罗恩格林的传说，在13世纪初叶诗人沃夫伦的代表作《帕西法尔》中便有提及，后来又出现不少以它为蓝本另外写成的作品。历史上的真实人物沃夫伦·冯·艾森巴哈，被誉为宫廷文学集大成的诗人。他的代表作《帕西法尔》是根据法国诗人克列第安·德·特洛瓦的未完成作品《圣杯的故事》写成的大叙事诗，全篇约两万五千行。诗篇的末尾约一百行，就是叙述帕西法尔之子罗恩格林的故事。
