Love Me Do was one of four songs part-recorded on the day, but an unhappy Martin requested a session drummer to complete the song. It was the final straw for John Lennon, Paul McCartney and George Harrison, who had been at odds with Best since their return from Hamburg, and they asked The Beatles’ manager, Brian Epstein, to fire him.
Love Me Do was written four years prior in 1958 by a 16-year-old McCartney, after skipping class at Liverpool Institute. McCartney had known Lennon for over a year at the time and played the song to the guitarist, who subsequently added the middle eight.
After Best’s departure, Ringo Starr was swiftly recruited and the band headed back into the studio under the direction of George Martin on September 4. Love Me Do was one of 12 songs rehearsed in the afternoon, and the second to be recorded (the first was How Do You Do It?) later that evening.
