Synopsis:

Matthew Bourne’s Sleeping Beauty: A Gothic Romance is a dark, romantic
reimagining of Tchaikovsky’s classic ballet. Combining gothic fantasy,
fairy-tale spectacle and a century-spanning love story, Bourne transforms
the familiar tale into a world populated by fairies, vampires, royal ceremony
and restless spirits.

Princess Aurora is cursed by the embittered fairy Carabosse to fall into a
deep sleep upon reaching adulthood. Her fate becomes entwined with Leo, the
royal gamekeeper with whom she falls in love, and Count Lilac, the King of
the Fairies who attempts to protect her. After Aurora sleeps for one hundred
years, she awakens in the modern world, where the curse has taken on a darker,
more dangerous form.

Recorded at London’s Sadler’s Wells Theatre, the production unfolds across
four time periods: Aurora’s birth in 1890, her coming of age in 1911, her
awakening in 2011, and her wedding in the present day. The performance features
Hannah Vassallo as Aurora, Dominic North as Leo, Christopher Marney as Count
Lilac, and Adam Maskell as Carabosse / Caradoc.
