Synopsis:

Matthew Bourne’s radical reimagining of Tchaikovsky’s Swan Lake replaces
the traditional female swan corps with a powerful, predatory and intensely
physical male ensemble. This landmark production reworks the familiar ballet
into a modern psychological drama of royal isolation, desire, repression and
emotional collapse.

The story follows a lonely Prince struggling under the scrutiny of a cold,
ceremonial royal world. His escape to a moonlit lake brings him face to face
with a magnificent Swan, offering an intimate moment of freedom and
acceptance. When the Swan’s seductive alter ego, the Stranger, later appears
at a royal ball, the Prince’s fragile world begins to unravel.

Filmed at London’s Sadler’s Wells Theatre, this 2012 production features
Richard Winsor as The Swan / The Stranger and Dominic North as The Prince.
The performance is accompanied by Tchaikovsky’s score, conducted by
David Lloyd-Jones and performed by the New London Orchestra.
