Synopsis:

The Nutcracker and the Mouse King is the Dutch National Ballet’s vivid
Amsterdam-set interpretation of Tchaikovsky’s beloved Christmas ballet.
Created by Wayne Eagling and Toer van Schayk, this production draws on
E. T. A. Hoffmann’s original tale and combines fantasy, theatrical spectacle
and a distinctly Dutch sense of place.

The story begins in wintertime Amsterdam, where Clara receives a Nutcracker
from the mysterious magician Drosselmeijer. During the night, her home is
transformed into a dream world: toys come alive, mice invade, the Nutcracker
leads a battle, and Clara is swept into an enchanted journey filled with
figures from literature, myth and imagination.

Recorded live at the Amsterdam Music Theatre in 2011, this staging features
Anna Tsygankova as Clara, Matthew Golding as the Prince and Drosselmeijer’s
Nephew, and James Stout as the Nutcracker. Ermanno Florio conducts the score
performed by Holland Symfonia, with the Dutch National Ballet, students of
the Nationale Balletacademie Amsterdam and the Children’s Choir “Waterland.”
